Halp! Searching for fashion advice

YOU GUYS.

I have been obsessed lately with fashion blogs and fashion on Pinterest and… the lack of fashion on my wardrobe. Ugh. Normally I don’t care all that much and with limited spare funds for shopping exploits, it’s easier to make do. Plus, my non-fashionista self has an irritatingly hard time selecting and pairing pieces.

But! Jon and I have planned a joint shopping splurge in the near future – hopefully SOONER than later *wink* – and I can’t tell you how excited I am to not only get rid of and replace much of my closet (honestly, I still have things from college; maybe before college) but also update Jon’s wardrobe. Giddy!

Alas, the time has not yet come, but I’m trying really hard to plan. Too often I impulse buy just because something is on sale and not necessarily because I love it or because it will last. And I’m pretty awful at shopping with the rest of my wardrobe in mind. The worst thing ever is getting home excited about a new piece and having nothing to wear it with. So I’m trying to be proactive while I bide my time (let’s be honest, I don’t actually want to plan and think this much) until shopping extravaganza can begin.

Ok, also, despite my big words, we don’t actually plan to spend a gazillion pennies. But it has been years since either of us were able to put a whole lot of effort or dollars into quality clothes and I, for one, think its past due. Jon is along for the ride. 🙂

Anyway, I’m switching up my fitness or life motivation to fashion inspiration this week. And HALP! I need advice, tips, ideas, style tips, anything. I’m creative enough that I want to say I’m pretty good at fashion stuff… but that’s just not the case. Here’s what I like: skinny bottoms; loose tops; short skirts; lots of color; not afraid of patterns but I have zero concept how to mix them; absolutely ok with sparkle; some structure but not too much; a “whimsy” feel; nothing fussy and definitely comfort reigns over all else.

Single #1 fashion tip; ready, go!

I’m sure you’ve got an awesome fashion sense – I think most people do down deep 🙂 It’s just figuring how how to express it individually that can cause us all some headaches. I am right there with you though – I am not a “fashionista” – I just know what I like and I’m learning what likes me, and finding where those two collide. I actually did a little program called Dressing Your Truth which actually helps you dress, but according to your facial profile and personality/energetic movement. I believe they have part of it for free. Here’s my share link if you’d like to look into it a bit more: http://kelly.dressingyourtruth.com/ I like it because even though it tells me what “type” I am (there are 4 types) and gives guidelines on what sort of fabrication/color/style/texture I should choose, how I express that can be sooo different than someone else who is the same type. (they also have an online shop where I get a lot of my basics from, especially when they go on sale because I’m a tightwad)

Some of my favorite places to shop personally – Thrift Stores, Dressing Your Truth (above), Zulily, LOFT, Maurices.

My “style” would definitely be on the romantic feminine side…not opposed to a ruffle here and there (though I am short, so nothing over the top) and a little lace, but also very natural and earthy, I love gray, but hate boring, I love extra little details on clothing like little pintucks or ruching or covered buttons.

I don’t have a favorite really…. gain inspiration from lots of people 🙂

Yay for your upcoming shopping event! Have fun! 🙂

Ooh, thanks Kelly! I’ll check out Design Your Truth – certainly sounds interesting. I know you do a fair amount of clothing stuff on your blog and I like your “feminine whimsy” tastes. This is perfect: “I just know what I like and I’m learning what likes me, and finding where those two collide.” I have some *ideas* what I like and what likes me – both of those definitely need some work still – but figuring out how that works together… sheesh! Some days I feel like I’ve been there for ages! But I’m determined to finally start defining all this a bit more and doing a better job at building a wardrobe I really enjoy.

(And hopefully a smaller one, honestly. There’s a bunch I just want to get rid of but still keep because I haven’t been able to replace enough. Time to simplify!)

Cute! I like your style! Love the mustard pants. I guess just try to copy what you are pinning! I just signed up for my first Stitch Fix because I rarely have the time to shop. Have you heard of them? I am excited to see what they chose for me. I am also almost 2 mos postpartum so I am waiting to fit back into all my pants!

I’ve heard of Stitch Fix but haven’t tried it. A couple of friend use it, more to add occasional interest pieces rather than keep everything. Everyone seems to really like it from what I’ve heard! I do read the SF blog occasionally; a recent post on mixing patters had some good pointers. I hope you love what they send!

I have such a hard time finding clothes. I know what I like but then I try it on and feel like I look ridiculous! I’m a shorty with an “athletic” build so pants are so hard- always getting them tailored. I love the mustard skinnies and chevron top!

For serious. So often I’m like, wait… can I really pull this off? I want to get to a point where I’m more confident in what I like and what works, and then feel great wearing it! Plus pieces that go from work to casual AND mix/match are necessities. When I think about all that I get overwhelmed. I just need someone to go shopping with and style me. 🙂

Pants are tough for me, too. Getting them to fit my thighs means they’re too big on my hips and waste. Even worse when I’m running more! I’m always doing a quick sew at home to take in waste bands.

A shopping spree sounds amazing! I think when you’re shopping you should just go with what you’re naturally attracted to and what makes you feel good when you try it on! I’m a budget shopper – some of my faves are Old Navy, Forever 21, American Eagle has THE best jeans! Good luck

I used to really like Old Navy (just haven’t been in a while) but I never got on the Forever 21 wagon. It’s on my list to revisit!
